Overview of the rules

Three Card Poker is played with a single deck of cards, shuffled for every hand. When playing the game at Winissimo, the table layout includes:

  • The Three Card Poker logo.

  • Three card-shaped spaces in front of the dealer to place his bets.

  • A circular betting spot marked “Pair Plus.”

  • A diamond-shaped betting spot marked as “Ante.”

  • A card-shaped betting spot marked as “Play.”

  • Pay tables for the Pair Plus bet and for ante bonus payoffs.

Ranking of hands in Three Card Poker

As each hand in Three Card Poker consists of only three cards, the ranking of hands differs from standard Poker rankings. Three Card Poker hand rankings – from high to low – are as follows:

  • Straight flush – Three consecutive cards of the same suit.

  • Three-of-a-kind – Three cards of the same rank.

  • Straight – Three consecutive cards of mixed suits.

  • Pair – Two cards of the same rank.

  • High card.

Bet types in Three Card Poker

There are two basic ways to play in Three Card Poker: Ante play and Pair Plus bets.  Depending on the player’s hand, these bets have specific rules which players are required to follow.

Ante bet

When playing Three Card Poker, Ante bet is a mandatory bet in which all players wager an equal amount of money or chips. Players add their ante wagers in the ante space before seeing the cards. If a player wishes to stay in the game after seeing the cards, they must place a Play bet equal to the ante. This bet pays out in one of the three ways in Three Card Poker:

  • If the dealer’s hand has a queen, the player receives even money on both the ante bets and play bets if they have a higher hand. On the other hand, the player loses both the bets if they have a lower hand.

  • If there is no queen in the dealer’s hand, the player will receive even money on their ante bets and the play bet is returned.

  • When there’s a tie, both ante and play bets push.

Pair Plus bet

Pair Plus bet in Three Card Poker is even simpler than the ante bet. Essentially, players make a wager that they’ll be dealt with a pair. If the players receive a pair in the three cards dealt with them, they win. If the player isn’t dealt a pair, they lose the bet.

How to play Three Card Poker

Three Card Poker requires players to make ante bets and create the highest hand at the table. The rules of the game are simple to learn; just follow these steps:

  1. Make a play wager – Players must make a play bet before any cards are dealt. This wager forms the basis for any subsequent payouts in the game.

  2. Place an ante or pair plus bet – This is an optional wager in Three Card Poker which gives players some form on insurance in the game.

  3. Look at your cards – The dealer deals three cards to each player face down and three cards to themselves. Players have the option to look at their own cards, but the dealer’s card is face down.

  4. Play through ante bets – If a player has made an ante bet, they must either raise or fold. If they raise, they add an additional bet. If they fold, they forfeit their ante bet.

  5. The dealer turns over their cards – Players then compare their hands against the dealer, who must have a queen high or better to qualify.

  6. Compare hands – If the dealer doesn’t have the qualifying cards, players win their ante bets and play bets become push. But if the dealer does qualify, then players need to compare their hands against the dealer. If the player has the highest hand, they get even money on their ante and play bets. On the other hand, the player loses both the bets if the dealer wins. If there is a tie, then the play and ante bets will push.

Bonus features

If a player has a straight, three-of-a-kind, or straight flush, then they receive an Ante bonus based on the player’s ante and the table’s posted paytable. The most common Ante bonus payoffs are 5-1 on straight flushes, 4-1 on three of a kind and 1-1 on straights. Even if the player has a losing hand compared to the dealer, he will still receive the Ante bonus, if applicable.

When playing Three Card Poker, players can also benefit from the Pair Plus bonus where the results are determined purely on your hand and not affected by the dealer. There are many different Pair Plus pay tables, which include:

  • Straight flush – 40:1

  • Three of a kind – 30:1

  • Straight – 6:1

  • Flush – 4:1

  • Pair – 1:1
